More evidence of the bizarre willingness of Americans and Europeans to spend tens of billions annually on supplements that are, at best, unproven and, often, very harmful. An AFP report says that a new study shows a 71 percent increase in the most dangerous kind of prostate cancer amongst men who take Omega 3 supplements and foods which are artificially supplemented. According to a gleeful report last week the Omega 3 market is worth $33 billion — most of it, admittedly, in food claims, not supplements (and we don’t know of any risk from high Omega 3 foods). God forbid anyone suggests we should contribute towards our own cancer treatments, though.
